Stranger Things fans rage at 'tasteless' SNL for mocking Will's coming out scene
Finn Wolfhard hosted Saturday Night Live in the show's first episode back from winter hiatus but viewers were left angry at him and the show over a Stranger Things sketch
When you see everyone hug Will and embrace him like that, it's just so powerful. While coming out scenes aren’t necessarily groundbreaking in Hollywood anymore, the episode takes place in 1987, when there was a lot more societal stigma, queer people regularly faced discrimination, and the HIV/AIDS outbreak had first occurred earlier in the decade.
Matt and Ross Duffer, the co-creators of the popular Netflix supernatural action series Stranger Things, defended the recently aired and long-awaited coming-out scene of its teenage character Will Byers after online commenters criticized the scene for seeming rushed and awkwardly written.
The bit, titled “Mike in Manhattan,” featured “SNL” host Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler) alongside his former “Stranger Things” co-stars Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas Sinclair) and Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson).
