The Athens area will face another round of wintry precipitation before it ends Sunday night with chilling cold temperatures.

The National Weather service's weekend forecast for Athens includes freezing rain and sleet on Saturday, Jan. 24 and Sunday, Jan. 25.

A large winter storm moving across the U.S. is expected to bring heavy snowfall to Athens from Saturday to Monday. Athens officials recommend staying off the roads and keeping an eye on weather updates.

“It will be after 7 or 8 p.m. when things start to trend over to frozen precipitation, and definitely after midnight is when it should be solidly freezing rain,” National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Willis said Saturday from his office in Peachtree City.
